The first Senior-Junior Team Championship was held in 1985 at Vista Hills CC in El Paso. Jim Lumley of Clovis and Ray Cragun of Zuni won the first title. On the Senior side, Luke thompson, PGA Life member from Roswell has been on three winning teams. On the Non-Senior side, Dan Koesters of New Mexico State GC has been on five winning teams. Each year the over-50 group from the Section picks their own partner for this popular and fun event.
In 2008, the Sun Country PGA witnessed one of the more dominant performances to date by two of its best players. Mark Pelletier of El Paso Country Club and Mike Putnam of Las Campanas in Sante Fe combined to shoot a 22-under par score of 120 to win by four strokes over Lone Star Golf Club’s own Bill Eschenbrenner and Mike Singleton. Their two rounds of 58 and 62 were the low scores for each round. If this team stays together in 2009, it will be a tough task for their fellow Sun Country PGA pros to dethrone this juggernaut of a team.
The format for the 36-hole Team Championship is 18 holes of two man scramble, and 18 holes Four Ball (better known as best ball).
The Lone Star Golf Club in El Paso has hosted this event since 2000 when Don Klein, PGA Life member and Scott Gates, general manager of Four Hills CC won the Championship. Lone Star will again be host for the championship in 2009.
