BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SECTION PRO-PRO TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
The first Pro-Pro Team Championship was held in 1965 when the Sun Country PGA was a chapter of the Southwest PGA. It was known as the New Mexico Chapter. Luke Thompson, from the Coronado CC, teamed with Joe Alsup to win the inaugural event. In 1966, PGA Tour player Lee Trevino teamed with Lee Olson to win. Trevino won two Sun Country Pro-Pro Championships. Former PGA Tour member Ronnie Black was the only other tour member to be a part of a winning team in 1983.
In 2010, amid sunny skies and strong gusts of wind, a team of seniors emerged victorious from a tough field to win the tightly contested tournament, as five teams finished within four strokes of the winners. Mark Pelletier and Jeff Roth were able to fend off Todd Kersting of Puerto Del Sol in Albuquerque and Zach Hoefel of twin warriors GC on the Santa Ana pueblo on the 3rd playoff hole. After both teams holed out for pars on the 1st playoff hole, Zach made a thunderous 40 foot birdie on the second hole to force what would be the 3rd and final playoff hole. After Zach and Todd narrowly missed birdie putts, it was Jeff Roth who stepped up and made a short 6 foot putt to seal the victory for his team. The team’s alternated format on each playoff hole, with the first hole being Las Vegas scramble and the second hole played in the four-ball format.
The Pro-Pro is one of the more popular tournaments in the Sun Country Section. Each of the teams play 18 holes each day with different formats each round. The first round is a two-person Las Vegas scramble and the second round is a four-ball stroke play format.
