In 1961 when the Sun Country PGA was only a chapter of the Southwest Section, Don Klein of Four Hills CC began an incredible stretch of winning six championships in a row of what was up until 2007 known as the Sun Country Stroke-Play Championship.
Besides Klein, the Players’ Championship has had many other great champions. Klein is the most decorated of the Stroke-Play champions by winning a total of seven championships, but the late Gene Torres had won six and Jim Dickson has won five as well.
In 2008, Sun Country PGA Player of the Year Bill Harvey returned to the Callaway Players’ Championship as the reigning champion. When the dust finally settled, he was able to successfully defend his title. Bill fired rounds of 69 and 66 for a two stroke victory over first round leaders Chris Thomas of Santa Teresa Country Club and Grant Dalpes of Desert Lakes GC in Alamogordo, N.M.
In 2009, the Callaway Golf Sun Country Players’ Championship was positioned as one of the two most important events of the year on the Sun Country schedule and feature 40 golf professionals and 60 of the top amateurs from around the Section.
