The PGA Professional National Championship is a tournament specifically for head golf professionals from around the country. It is a chance for them to showcase their playing ability and compete with some of the best players in their profession. Each of the 41 PGA Sections hosts a qualifier to determine who will compete in the national event. The 2010 Professional National Championship will be held at Hershey Country Club in Hersey, PA., in June 2011.
The Sun Country PGA will be sending three qualifiers to the 2011 national championship. Joining Champion Scott Lieberwirth will be two senioirs, Dan Koesters of NMSU Golf Course and Carlton Blewett of Spring River Golf Course. Dan shot rounds of 70 and 71 to finish at 3 under and Carlton carded rounds of 70 and 73 to finish 1-under par for the tournament. The 2010 SCSPGA PNC Qualifier was quite a challenge for all of the Sun country Section Professionals who participated in the event. Three inches of rain during the final round cut the much anticipated event to 36 holes. Held at The Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, N.M., the long and challenging golf course yeilded only three sub 70 rounds. Tournament champion Scott Lieberwirth, Head Golf Coach for NMSU Men’s Golf Team, found himself 1 shot out of the lead after the first round, posting a 1-under, 71. After opening his second round with a bogie, Scott caught fire midway through his round, posting 5 birdies in an eight hole stretch and cruising to a 4-under par 68. Scott would go on to win by two strokes over Dan Koesters to claim his first Sun Country PGA Professional Championship Title.
